SGO: Introducing Dan

Hi, my name is Dan and I’m excited to be an #ActingTogether Officer for the SGO this academic year. Acting together is an incredible thing that builds communities and makes real change, even in a year as strange as 2020. The best way to promote change is to make those changes together, and I’m thrilled to be part of a community like the SGO.

I’m a third-year film student with a passion for creating, I especially love making films or food because of the stories they can tell. Film and food can bring insight to a culture or a moment in time, and because of this they can feel incredibly personal to everyone.

Despite how hectic and isolating lockdown can be, I really do believe that togetherness is something we can all achieve, and something that people need in times like these. My main objective during my time with the SGO is to find ways to strengthen our community, and to share experiences that help make our community and the world around us a more sustainable place.

I believe the best way to make progress is through many small changes, which in turn make a big difference, and so throughout my time as #ActingTogether Officer I hope to encourage and assist people to make positive change wherever possible, whether it be for the environment or for the people around us. One aim of mine is to make the SDG’s (Sustainable Development Goals) more accessible and understood. While the SDG’s are built with large governments in mind, the people have a say in how our governments handle sustainability, and so understanding these goals and how they can be achieved is a big step towards progress.

A huge part of my life is spent exploring the countryside, and Canterbury is such a beautiful place for walks in woods and along lakes. I’ve fallen in love with the areas around us and want to see them thrive. Above everything, I want to share my passion for the world around us, because knowing about the world is an excellent incentive to preserving it. As someone with Norwegian heritage I have also had some amazing opportunities to travel, to learn about different cultures and in turn learn about myself, something I cannot recommend enough.

Alongside my SGO work, I also manage the Film Society social media accounts, and I’m regularly involved in film making and producer work. I enjoy being creative, engaging with people and sharing experiences, in my eyes this is what community is about. With the skills I have, and with the help of this community, I hope to be part of something that helps us all grown and develop, while making long lasting sustainable change.

I’m excited to see what this year will bring, to develop my skills more and hopefully create events and blog posts that get people engaged in sustainability. If you are interested in sustainability, our social media pages are an excellent way of learning and engaging in our community.
