ADHD Awareness Month 2023

Throughout October, we’ll be celebrating ADHD Awareness Month here at Augustine House Library. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a form of neurodivergence in which the individual experiences persistent difficulty with maintaining focus and/or shows high impulsivity which interferes with their ability to function on a day-to-day basis.

ADHD is believed to be primarily caused by genetics, and often runs in families. It is currently believed that ADHD develops in childhood, and is a lifelong condition. It is estimated that between 3 and 4% of adults have some form of ADHD, though despite rising numbers, to this day the majority go undiagnosed. This may be due to a lack of understanding of the condition, or presenting milder external symptoms, or stigma against the condition.

What support is there for students with ADHD?

If you have or suspect you may have ADHD, you may be eligible for emotional, educational or financial support. To find out more, visit our Disability and Mental Health Support page or contact us by:

Students who are struggling to stay organised or manage their workload can also get a little help from our Learning Skills Hub. This offers several modules for neurodivergent students, for example about time management and beating the urge to procrastinate. Check out the Learning Skills Hub Disability & Wellbeing page for more details!

Where can you find out more about ADHD?

You can find out more about symptoms and diagnosis by visiting ADHD UK, and if you suspect that you may have ADHD, speak to a GP for a referral to a specialist.
