Since 2011, Senior Lecturer, Tim Jones, from the School of Media, Art and Design has been carrying out research into amateur film making in the Kent area, initially focusing on the Canterbury District. These webpages aim to show some of the highlights from this on-going research.

As celluloid cine film has a limited lifespan, Tim’s research aims to actively search for local amateur film to ensure its preservation for the future. This quest has led to a number of exciting collections of home movies being unearthed, with more films continuing to be discovered regularly. In many cases films have sat in lounge cupboards, sheds and lofts for the past 70 years or more waiting for a suitable home. These films are providing a unique record of the local area as it was and give an insight into the development of amateur cinema.

Tim has the specialist telecine equipment to digitise all types of amateur films safely whether they were originally shot on 16mm, 9.5mm, Std 8 or Super 8. If you have amateur film made in the Kent area that you believe would be of interest please contact Tim by e-mail: tim.jones@canterbury.ac.uk

Films uploaded to this website are accompanied by contextual statements which are based on; interviews with the copyright holders, information from the original cine films, feedback from public screenings and research carried out by Tim Jones for his documentaries focussed on amateur filmmaking.
