I’m looking forward to a feast of lectures next week because as well as the Ninth Annual Thomas Becket Lecture on Wednesday 26 November at 6pm, there will be Martin Watts’ exploration of the names on the St Gregory’s War Memorial at 3pm on Saturday 29 November. The Becket Lecture looks to be a real treat because it will be great to hear from an expert on medieval law courts and so gain an appreciation of how men, such as Thomas Becket and his clerks, understood the legal processes. Dr Nick Karn’s studies of the royal and church courts reveal some very interesting power structures, especially during Becket’s time when disputes between king and archbishop affected relations not only in England but across medieval Christendom.
