Zulfi Ali wins Sustainability Champion Green Gown Award

Lecturer Zulfi Ali, who has been paving the way in embedding the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the curriculum at Christ Church with Project 93, received national recognition for his achievements at the Green Gown Awards last week where he won the award for Staff Sustainability Champion.

“This award is tremendous national recognition of Zulfi’s passion for transforming the student learning experience at the University. The far-reaching themes of sustainability are fundamental to our work and this award is testament to Zulfi’s commitment to ensuring that our graduates are aware and active in areas of environmental and social justice.”

– Professor Rama Thirunamachandran, Vice Chancellor and Principal

Zulfi was one of the founders of the ‘Us in the World’ partnership, and his Project 93 initiative, now into its third year, has brought staff and  students together to a series of screenings, talks, seminars and more in an attempt to encourage not just academic discourse, but importantly action.

Judges comments on Zulfi’s work were glowing:

“Judges were blown away by the dynamism, range and scale of Zulfi’s approach to enriching the academic experience, encouraging social activism inspiring across the university a community of critical thinkers. Huge transferability and reach!”

In September, Zulfi spoke very passionately to staff and students assembled on campus about the climate emergency and the need to build a movement around climate change. He invited all those present to join him in a show of solidarity alongside the city’s students, who were taking part in the global student strikes that day. You see a video of his speech here.
