This Spring, Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT) launches this new apprenticeship programme aimed at making careers in Simulation Based Education more inclusive and accessible for all. At a time when the lives and careers of people in the UK have been affected exponentially by the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic, this work-based learning experience will create a much-needed route into the Healthcare Education sector.
A Simulation Technician is an integral member of the clinical educator and simulation team. Their day-to-day role is to provide operational co-ordination of all technical aspects of clinical and non-clinical education within the simulation, clinical, classroom and virtual learning environments.
In essence this is to provide technical support to clinical and simulation educators in the planning, preparing, and running of clinical and non-clinical training activities in a range training facilities.
Working in collaboration with the Science Council and the Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH), HHFT hopes to pioneer this new apprenticeship which is sought after across the NHS and Higher Education Institutions. This includes recruiting apprentices in unique positions within university medical/nursing schools and hospital clinical skills and resuscitation training areas, to name but a few, providing insight and invaluable experience and skills to simulation-based education. Following a successful trailblazer group initiated in 2018, this new fully funded apprenticeship programme forms part of HHFT’s commitment to increasing the quality and diversity of the national workforce, to better reflect the ever-changing needs of the audience it serves.
To be eligible, candidates must be aged 16 or above, reside in England and be working a minimum of 22.5 hours per week. The apprenticeship will last for 18-24 months and upon successful completion, candidates will be qualified as a Level 3 Education Technician and be eligible to apply for registration with ASPiH and the Science Council.
