CCCU Politics team at PSA 2024

In March, 8 members of our Politics team travelled to gorgeous Glasgow for the 2024 Political Studies Association conference. The PSA conference is the largest political studies event in the UK, with over 700 delegates from across the globe.

We were thrilled to see so many friendly faces from across the Politics HE universe and to share our research with our wider community.

Our presentations show what a diverse group of specialists we are!

· Dr Dele Babalola and his PhD student Gabriel Oduh presented their paper, ‘Comparative analysis of secessionist agitations in federations: A case of Biafra in Nigeria and Bougainville in Papua New Guinea (PNG)’.

· Professor David Bates presented on ‘Marxism and Human Emancipation’ and coordinated further Marxism Specialist Group panels in his role as co-convenor.

· Dr Susan Kenyon and Fran Gould presented a paper produced during Fran’s student internship with us, called ‘Understanding Barriers To Sustainable Travel: Exploring The Persistence Of The Car Culture Amongst Young People In The UK’.

· Jo Rothery discussed her PhD research, ‘Politics of Place in England and the Rise of Resentment’.

· Dr Tom Sharkey presented his research, ‘Alexander Herzen, the Russian Socialists and Max Stirner: Egoism, Ownness and Postanarchist Thought’.

· Dr Carolina Silveira presented her research, in a paper titled ‘Kilted lads and Funny gags: Exploring Scottish Identity and Standup Comedy’.

Across the three days, we learnt so much from the other delegates, about a wide range of topics and we had tremendous fun. The conference represented Scottish hospitality at its best. Thank you to the team at the PSA and the University of Strathclyde, for all of their hard work – we can’t wait for PSA 75 in Birmingham next year!
