More Conferences for Canterbury Staff!

On this occasion it was Dr. John FitzGibbon was invited to present on Euroscepticism in the Irish context as part of the conference “Reflections on 40 Years of Irish EU Membership” at University College Cork, Ireland.  His presentation focused on the apparent anomaly of strong Irish support for the Euro and EU membership more generally despite referendum votes against EU Treaties and declining trust in the EU.  Indeed the Eurocrisis and its impact on Ireland and European integration more generally was a clear feature of the papers at the conference.  Despite the retrospective nature of the conference theme the Eurocrisis loomed large in the majority of papers with the key argument arising that Ireland’s EU relationship has changed radically in 40 years, with the Eurocrisis forming a new point from which a new dimension to the Ireland-EU relationship will emerge.
