Lord Mayor marks milestone in new STEM building for the South East

The Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Councillor Colin Spooner, officially turned the first sod on the site of a new £65m building for Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine at Canterbury Christ Church University.

The ceremony was held on Wednesday 30 January at the University’s main campus to celebrate the start of construction on this major building in the city. The Mayor was joined by 30 guests during the ground-breaking ceremony and reception.

Councillor Spooner said: “It’s a great honour to come here and see what’s happening. It’s something that as a city councillor I’m very proud of what we’re doing here at the University.”

A host of guests attended the ceremony, including senior representatives from Kent County Council, Canterbury City Council, representatives from Hamilton Architects and Gilbert Ash, business representatives from the University Strategic Industry Advisory Board for Engineering, Science and Technology and the Kent and Medway Medical School Fundraising Board.
