GradForce Ambassador

The GradForce team are introducing you to their ambassadors, who are giving their reasons to encourage you to sign up for GradForce: Get Hired! programme. Read this time from Miroslava…

My name is Miroslava and as a final year student I am excited about the Get Hired! programme that our University offers. It is a fantastic opportunity that I myself would apply for, but since I am one of the ambassadors for GradForce and this project, I will attend the sessions along with you to get the best understanding of what they involve and how I can support you.

As an international student, whose first language is not English, I understand how difficult it can be to move to another country, trying to find your place in the world and the community. We often have to be extra cautious to make sure we used the right words and the right accent. I am also a first a generation student, so I know what it is like when your family cannot academically support you, and I have had to work a lot throughout my studies to support myself financially. Finally, I have been struggling with mental health issues since my teenage years to the point when I had to take a break from my university studies. It took me 2 years to get back on track and I am very proud to say that I am going into the second semester looking forward to write my dissertation and make my final student film.

I aim to work in film production after my studies. This is an incredibly competitive industry so not only do I need to make my CV look good, but I especially need to gain transferable skills that will make me stand out from the crowd of applicants. I believe that being at university is not just about getting the academic and practical know-how for our future jobs. It is also about learning how to be professional, how to communicate politely and effectively, how to work on our own but also as part of a team. And most of all, I have learnt that what is often overlooked by students but sought after by employers is confidence and knowing who you are, what you want and what you can achieve.

If there is anything you can relate to in the text above, I would like to encourage you to apply for the Get Hired! programme designed by the GradForce team, who want to support students like us. It is a self-development and employability skills programme for final year and postgraduate students from minority and underrepresented groups and it can really change your life. Do not forget, the deadline is 10th January so let your friends and classmates know and apply here: https://www.canterbury.ac.uk/current-students/careers-and-volunteering/careers-and-jobs/gradforce .

Good luck and I am looking forward to accompany you on your self-development journey!
