Introducing: Emilia, SGO Project Officer

Hey! I’m Emilia and I’m one of the new Student Green Projects Officers. I am currently in my second year, studying BA Photography, with no clue what I want to do after university. I have the music taste of your divorced dad mixed with your cool mum (meaning I am still gutted I couldn’t get Radiohead tickets), and I’m an Indie Rock Night warrior, so you will almost definitely catch me in Tokyo on a Thursday night.

Writing about myself is genuinely one of my worst nightmares, so some more about me as I fight for my life writing this post: I absolutely love vintage fashion and will never say no to a charity shop trip. My best thrift find currently has got to be a pair of 2000s Apple Bottom jeans, or perhaps an old Harrington I picked up for just £2.

I grew up in Bromley and have spent the whole of the past year explaining to people where that is- I’d say Southeast London, you might argue Kent. Therefore, growing up with parents that despised being in the house, I have seen practically the whole of the Kent coastline, instilling in me a great respect for the local environment and its beauty.  I am passionate about social sustainability as well. Going to an all-girls secondary school (traumatic, I know) has made me immensely passionate about feminism and concerned with promoting women’s rights and safety.

I spent my summer sobbing (literally) over job applications and rejections. None of the jobs I applied for were particularly interesting but being constantly ignored by almost every job you apply for starts to wear you down quite quickly. Enter the Student Green Office. I jumped at the opportunity to work for the University, especially as I enjoyed working as a Student Ambassador last year and sent off an application. Come to interview day, and I was convinced I had been unsuccessful. Left the interview and cried level of failed. So, receiving the email the next day to say that I’d been offered a job, whilst simultaneously trying to move into my uni house, was unexpected to say the least (and ever so slightly joyous).

I’d say I that I’m at the beginning of my sustainability journey and I’m excited to learn so much in this role. Everyone on the team has been unbelievably welcoming and friendly, and I cannot wait to get involved with the work that they do.

Look out for events run by the Student Green Office on campus and stay up to date on what we are up to. All support is welcomed as together we can work towards a better, more sustainable future for everyone.
