On Tuesday, 6 May, our own Senior Lecturer Dr Amelia Hadfield ventured into the heady world of local politics, giving a brief but punchy overview on aspects of EU leadership in global affairs. Invited to speak by Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson and Councillor for Westgate, James Flanagan, Amelia took the floor at the Canterbury and Coastal Liberal Democrat’s new ‘Politics and Pudding’ initiative (http://cantlibdem.org.uk/en/). She examined a few key areas where the EU has provided credible examples of policy pioneering, including international trade, climate change, and security and defence. Amelia also looked at the role played by Britain in fostering EU leadership in interesting and frequently unrecognized ways. Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate for North Thanet, George Cunningham (Brussels & Europe Lib Dems Vice Chair) acted as respondent, followed by an interesting and engaging Q&A session.
