International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) is an international awareness campaign to raise the profile of women in engineering, celebrate their outstanding achievements and focus attention on the amazing career opportunities available to girls in this exciting industry.
It was launched for the first time in the UK in 2014 by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) to celebrate its 95th anniversary. Since its launch the awareness day has grown significantly to the point where it received UNESCO patronage in 2016. In 2017, National Women in Engineering Day became international for the first time due to the interest and enthusiasm developed by the international audience and participants in the previous years.
It takes place on 23 June every year and in 2018 the theme was #RaisingTheBar.
To celebrate Women in Engineering Day 2018 we produced two short videos for social media. We asked our female STEM academics and local primary school children Pilgrims’ two questions: ‘what is your favourite invention?’ and ‘if you could invent anything, what would it be?’.
