Dr Wendy Iredale

Recent Publications:

Iredale, W., Jenner, K., Van Vugt, M., & Dempster, T. (2020). Giving guys get the girls: Men appear more desirable to the opposite sex when displaying costly donations to the homeless. MDPI: Social Sciences.

Research Interests:

I am interested in exploring the human mind and behaviour from the perspective of social and evolutionary theory.  My work focuses on answering questions that address: why we help others at a cost for ourselves (altruism, charity, and environmental behaviour), how we behave in situations of mass panic (collective resilience), why photographs of eyes can elicit changes in behaviour (costly signalling), and sex differences in human mate choice.

Current Research Projects:

My current projects include:

  • Altruism in relation to mating preferences.  This is in collaboration with Mark Van Vugt from VU University in Amsterdam and Keli Jenner (see here for her profile: [Please insert link to this staff member’s profile]).
  • The eyes have it!  Whether photographs of eyes on computer screens increase giving behaviour (and if so, the implications for online charity giving).  This is in collaboration with Mark Van Vugt from VU University in Amsterdam and Keli Jenner.
  • Good genes or good behaviours: do females select mates based on attraction or altruism?
  • Does the type of altruistic behaviour matter? Whether non-reciprocal altruism is seen as a stronger attractive mate trait.
