To say that we’ve been going through difficult and challenging times over the last few weeks would be an understatement for many people. Even those of us who have kept generally fit and well, active and upbeat, have often found it hard to find many positive things to think about. And yet, one of the knock-on effects of there being less traffic noise and everyday work-related sounds has been the ability to hear birdsong more clearly.
The Mental Health Foundation works to prevent mental health problems and is the home of the #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek. This year, they have chosen Kindness as their main focus because:
Kindness. There is one golden rule. It comes in many forms and said in many ways. But, ultimately always means the same thing ‘do unto others, as you would have them do unto you’. This is a staple of life, existing throughout time, embedding itself into humanity. This saying, in its original form, can be traced back to the Holy Bible ‘Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you: do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets’ (Matthew 7:12)
Mental Health Awareness Week, hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, will be taking place Monday 13th – Sunday 19th May and this year’s theme is Body Image. It is a topic that has recently been featuring heavily in discussions and debates on social media and in the news, so this feels like a timely opportunity to talk about my personal experiences with the issue of body image and how it can be explored using resources in the library.
