The South East Archive of Seaside Photography (SEAS) was established in 2012 with assistance from a substantial Heritage Lottery Funding award. The Archive is located within the Centre for Research on Communities and Cultures at Canterbury Christ Church University.
SEAS Photography provides new insight into commercial seaside photographic practice from 1860-1990. The research brings focus onto a hitherto overlooked form of photography, revealing rich seams of imagery and offering new perspectives on coastal histories. SEAS Photography examines how the British seaside photograph can be reconsidered, acknowledging both the innovative practice of making photographs plein-air and also the sitter’s experience of having one’s image made within the public sphere. Through this website and associated exhibitions, publications and conference presentations, images which have never previously been seen are made visible and accessible.
SEAS welcomes researchers and creatives to access the full collection.
