Politics at CCCU has always had an activist ethos. We emphasise to our students that they will have an important role to play in changing the world. Their impact as citizens will be important. This blog celebrates some of our graduates who are being recognised for the work they are doing to make a difference in their communities and in the wider world.
Daniel Rattigan won Kent Teacher of the Year. This award recognised his extra-curricular work to secure funding for youth clubs and programmes – specifically the Canterbury Warhammer Alliance – to make sure that it remains free to access for all young people in the area.
Jana Kopernich was the first winner of the CCCU Alumni Sustainability award. She has been working at the United Nations since 2012 and has led projects supporting governments, private sector companies, and people worldwide to embark on a transition towards clean/low-carbon and climate resilient development pathways.
Michaela Jamelska won a Global Innovation Award: Women AI during the New York Tech Week. Michaela is a human rights activist and tech expert. She was recognised for her work in the AI space and pushing the boundaries of NOVA’s AI application in research and championing responsible AI.
Ondřej Boháč received the Ukrainian Order of Merit from President Zelensky in Kyiv in early October for supporting Ukraine. President Zelensky highlighted Colt CZ Group where Ondřej is Head of Public Sector as a key partner in the development of the defence industry.
We also want to recognise our graduates who have put their heads above the parapet and run for public office. Roben Franklin has been elected to Canterbury City Council. Christine Wallace and Andrew Achilleos were unsuccessful in their attempts to win seats at the UK general election in July but no doubt they will continue to find ways to bring about change in their communities.
This is probably only the tip of the iceberg in terms of the contributions our graduates are making. If you wish to share your stories, please do get in touch so we can celebrate your achievements too!
