Sportivate funding for Christ Church Sport

Christ Church Sport has been awarded over £8,000 after a successful funding application to enable more students to try sport.

Christ Church Sport will have even more new activities for students and staff to try their hand at over the next academic year thanks to £8,351 of funding from Sport England’s Sportivate programme. Sportivate aims to give currently inactive young people the chance to try new activities that they may not have otherwise had the chance to and ties in very well with Christ Church’s TrySport project which also aims to provide opportunities for students and staff to try new activities.

  • Cycling
  • Golf
  • Handball
  • Horseriding
  • Pickleball
  • Ultimate Frisbee

Some of the funding will go into the purchase of 12 bikes which will be stored at the Sports Centre that will be available to be used by students and staff on an ad hoc basis as well as utilised for the TrySport project which will tie into the Government’s Bikeability scheme which aims to give those that have never learnt to ride a bike the skills and confidence to do so.

Pickleball is almost a cross between Tennis, Badminton and Table Tennis and a lot of fun and really easy to pick up. You can see this quirky new sport on YouTube and keep up to date with the developments of the sport with the national governing body, GB Pickleball.

Another new activity the funding will enable is Ultimate Frisbee which is almost a hybrid of American Football and Netball but with a disc instead of a ball. Again it’s a really easy sport to pick up and you can see how it is played on YouTube too.

If you would like to put yourself down as interested in any of these activities please email trysport@canterbury.ac.uk to go down on the mailing list to be notified first when the activities are ready to book.
