Tips for building your emotional resilience

Taking steps to look after your wellbeing can help you deal with pressure
and reduce stress. Build your resilience and coping skills with these tips…

Make some lifestyle changes to help you feel more able to cope with pressure. For example, use relaxation techniques like having a bath, listening to music or reading a good book; develop your interests and hobbies to get away from everyday pressures; make time for your friends – it can help you feel more positive and less isolated; and find balance in your life – focus some of your energy on other parts of your life, like friends or hobbies.

Look after your physical health to help you manage stress and take care of your mental wellbeing. It’s important to get good sleep – being well-rested can increase your ability to deal with difficult situations; be more physically active – physical activity is important for reducing stress levels; and eat healthily – what you eat, and when you eat, can make a big difference to how well you feel.

Give yourself a break – be kinder to yourself. Reward yourself for achievements and get a change of scenery – go outside, go to the cinema or a café for a break; take time off or have a holiday – time away from your routine can help you relax and feel refreshed; and forgive yourself when you make a mistake or don’t achieve something you hoped for.

Use your support network – you don’t have to cope alone. Your network might include friends and family – telling the people close to you how you’re feeling can make a big difference; get support from your tutors, student union, or student services – sharing your experience can help you feel less alone; or seek help from your doctor.
