Developing Skills, Driving Research: Adedayo’s Journey from MSc to PhD

Adedayo Olowolayemo is an MSc Data Intelligence graduate, having completed his degree in 2023, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Artificial Intelligence at CCCU. Passionate about data, mathematics, and research, Adedayo chose CCCU for its supportive learning community and hands-on approach to teaching. Read about some of his highlights and learning from his time here.

Why did you decide to study at Christ Church and why specifically your course?

When making a choice about a university, one important factor I consider a must is an institution that provides real support, more like a learning community, and not just a place where students are left to figure out their path in life. For me, CCCU ticked that very firmly.

I chose to study Data Intelligence because I have always wanted to delve into IT and particularly Data focused course, based on my previous work where I was always involved in Data Analysis tasks, coupled with the fact that I wanted a course that would accept applicants who do not have their first degree in computing specifically, but have related work experience. Again, the Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate approach interests me, as I believe it is a great way to learn and master a skill.

What was the most important learning point you took with you from your time here?

One important learning point I took with me is the research skill. Coming to study Data Intelligence, I braced for a course all about data, but beyond my expectations, the course also developed students’ research skills.

What advice would you give to a prospective student considering studying the same course?

Be prepared to get your hands on with lots of practical and lab sessions!

How did your time at Christ Church support your career journey?

I am currently doing my PhD in Artificial Intelligence in the Department for Computing, AI, and Cyber Security at Christ Church University, and I am working with the University’s Student and Academic Services as a Learning Developer (Maths).

I developed my research skills largely during my MSc degree, which is very useful to me in my PhD work. Also, I was able to build up on my passion for maths because one of the pillars of Data science is mathematics. While studying at CCCU, I had access to vast resources that I leveraged to build my skills and competence, which have been equally useful to me in my role as Learning Developer.

How do you plan to use the skills and knowledge you have gained, going forward?

The data analysis skills I gained during my study remain very needed and useful in my role as a Learning Developer. Though I came here to study Data Intelligence with the goal of becoming a Data Analyst, I am now very much interested in Research. To excel in this role as a Machine Learning Researcher, I would always keep knowledge and skills in ML model development and research at the forefront of my toolkit.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

It feels great and quite rewarding to see that I can now help students understand core Maths and statistical skills that once seemed too difficult for them. And doing research can be interesting as well as very demanding, and it takes a lot of time.

My proudest achievement so far has been delivering my first level 7 workshop as an Learning Developer and as a Researcher when my article was accepted.
