It is important to ascertain what type of assessment has been set, if it is for formative feedback or the assessment is being marked anonymously? You will then be able to select the correct Turnitin set-up for both the Final (on time) and After Deadline submission points. Certain types of assessment cannot be similarity checked or even submitted to Turnitin! See the table below to select which set-up you require.
List of common types of assessment
Essay, typical word-processed document containing some images, tables and graphs. Under the Policy these should be submitted to Turnitin and can return a similarity score so long as it meets Turnitin’s requirements, listed earlier.
Hand written reports, often scanned to create an electronic copy and then submitted to a Turnitin Assignment. Turnitin would not be able to return a similarity check on these as it would see the scanned reports as an image, therefore not meeting the required 20 words of text.
In-Class Presentation, students do not need to submit anything directly to a Turnitin Assignment, but instead staff can use the Turnitin Assignment to provide efeedback and grades through the grading template.
Poster Presentation, usually created in Word or PowerPoint, including text boxes and images. Although there may well be more than 20 words of text on the Poster, the text is often in a ‘text box’ which Turnitin sees as a shape, and therefore unable to read and is unable to return a similarity report.
PowerPoint Presentation, usually created in PowerPoint, including text boxes, images, slide themes, possibly animation and transitions. Turnitin struggles to read text within ‘text boxes’ on a slide, therefore may not be able to return a similarity report.
Timed Exam, similar to in-class presentations, students do not need to submit anything directly to a Turnitin Assignment, but instead staff can use the Turnitin Assignment to provide efeedback and grades through the grading template.
Video / Audio, any movies or podcasts created by students cannot be submitted to Turnitin, instead these would need to be submitted to a Blackboard Assignment via Kaltura.
Workbook, workbooks are predominantly created within PebblePad, therefore feedback and grades would be returned directly through PebblePad / Atlas, and there is no need for a Turnitin Assignment.
