My name is Felicity, and I have been one of your Student Green Office Projects\u2019 Officers. I have just completed my second year of LLB Law with International Relations; and I have cried many times trying to write this blog &#8211; out of sadness that my role is ending, but out of happiness for everything I have achieved (if you\u2019d like to see my growth in action, please read <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/introducing-felicity-sgo-project-officer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my first blog<\/a>)!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have learned that practicing law traditionally is not the only avenue that I can pursue. I love the idea of research, and will probably pursue a PhD eventually; not having <em>everything<\/em> planned out is a beautiful part of life! One of many lessons I have learned during my time with the SGO. I have been through a lot this year, through being involved in tricky religious groups, losing friendships at university and outside of it, but the SGO remained my constant support network. My diagnosis of Mixed Anxiety and Depressive Disorder and becoming more self-aware allowed me to shed some of the things that I thought I was proud of, including my <em>\u2018maximalism\u2019.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wasn\u2019t a maximalist. I was scared of letting go. I still love a trinket, and I <strong>love<\/strong> self-care, but doing both in moderation and being conscious of <em>what <\/em>I\u2019m purchasing and <em>why <\/em>I am purchasing it has been amazing for my mental health and my physical space; I\u2019d like to apply this method to this blog, to be conscious of <em>what <\/em>I have achieved and <em>why <\/em>I did it, in order to let go and to assess <em>where <\/em>I am going now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Enraged Environmentalist &amp; Dunce Cap Creator<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"481\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/669\/2025\/06\/Picture1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/669\/2025\/06\/Picture1.jpg 602w, https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/669\/2025\/06\/Picture1-300x240.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image description: Flic with a bongo, wearing a homemade dunce cap (made out of a KFC bag, a pom pom, and yes &#8211; bells, so it jingles) at a team meeting<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was in secondary school, and <em>that video <\/em>of the turtle with the straw stuck in its nose hit the internet, and for a long time after, people would yell <em>\u2018save the turtles\u2019 <\/em>at me whenever I passed them, because of how much of a fuss I made about it online. I would post about environmental issues, I would relate a topic back to them: I was a nuisance, I was furious. I lost that for a while &#8211; People would tell me it wasn\u2019t appealing, that it was annoying and they saw my anger but not <em>why<\/em> I was angry. I remember getting into an argument with one of my sixth form teachers about how lawns were terrible for the environment, which inspired one of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/lawn-and-order-how-the-unattainable-beauty-standard-is-invading-our-green-spaces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my first blogs<\/a>. Turns out I was right (I love being right), about being angry and about being loud (I love being angry and loud). We should be furious at what is being done to our one and only home. I started being really angry and loud again, and this time I was met with support. I was welcomed by the Students\u2019 Union as the Environmental Officer, where I yelled about plant-based catering (<a href=\"https:\/\/forms.cloud.microsoft\/Pages\/ResponsePage.aspx?id=2rIgA90iq02MIW5kS6FPE8LRDuS5LMNHgc9rmCa37ShUM1EyVjJKSVVQNVU4R0xDMlg0NVBMUlZWSy4u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>What\u2019s <em>this? <\/em>A petition?<\/strong><\/a>), commuting students, and everything in between.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I yelled about the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/from-roots-to-riches-reframing-the-zero-waste-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018Zero Waste\u2019 label<\/a>, and I yelled about <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/bright-lights-dark-effects-the-true-cost-of-fireworks-displays\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fireworks<\/a>. I yelled about Glue and Candles, about Cultural Appropriation and Carbon Offsetting. I had an entire cross-platform, month long yell about consumerism \u2013 about <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wisdom-wildlife-and-power-understanding-anthropocentrism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anthropocentrism<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wellness-wealth-and-power-understanding-philanthrocapitalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">philanthrocapitalism<\/a>, fast fashion, food consumption, films about overconsumption; through the <em>\u2018Wellness inc.\u2019 Project \u2013 <\/em>created a new method of project delivery, and am still left with enough anger to continue yelling about all of these things! I will never stop yelling now that I have found my voice again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Joys of Justice<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/669\/2025\/06\/image-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/669\/2025\/06\/image-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/669\/2025\/06\/image-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/669\/2025\/06\/image-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/669\/2025\/06\/image.jpeg 1380w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image description: a mirror selfie with Flic and Maddie in the Verena Holmes bathrooms<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as I have found my (yelling) voice again, I have experienced so much love from the SGO, which I will never stop sharing. I knew this relatively early on, during our <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/shopping-through-your-past-the-sgos-reverse-haul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reverse Haul and Love Letters Project<\/a>, learning more about everyone and supporting them in their own projects \u2013 such as Maddie\u2019s allergy friendly mission. I joined the SGO to make new friends, to learn, teach and share the joys of environmentalism, and I have achieved this! From participating in Carbon Literacy Training, becoming a Force of Nature Programme Participant, becoming part of the Wilder Kent Committee at CCCU, sitting on a student panel at the recent CCCBeU panel (and embarrassing Maddie by talking about how <em>lovely<\/em> she is), the <em>Wellness Inc.<\/em> and <em>Transit Talks vol. 1 <\/em>pop-ups, to the up-and-coming <em>Wellness Inc Event, Climate Caf\u00e9 <\/em>and <em>Transit Talks vol. 2 <\/em>event \u2013 whatever this looks like; I have shared the joys, fears and love that comes from being in these spaces. I have met so many wonderful people in this role, such as Jack Swan \u2013 a previous SGO and current <em>mystical figure <\/em>to look up to, and Adriana \u2013 whose kindness and laughter makes me feel <em>seen.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is my <em>why \u2013 why learn? <\/em>How could I know these hardworking and beautiful people if I didn\u2019t? I also won the Super Student Award at the CCSU Celebrates Awards! It\u2019s nice to be recognised for my work through these awards, and I am grateful for these achievements, I\u2019d like people to remember what I have done, even if it only touched them in a <em>small <\/em>way. I\u2019m okay being <em>\u2018that girl sits in touchdown screaming about food\u2019, <\/em>because it means that you\u2019ve remembered my mission and taken some of it with you; challenging or affirming your own beliefs \u2013 and that\u2019s what I set out to do!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My time at the SGO has been filled with resource making, trackers and how-to guides, zines, mood boards and goal trackers \u2013 resources to answer tough questions about sex and travelling, taking action and make life easier for the planet and the people!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Flic(k)ing Forward<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"451\" height=\"339\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/669\/2025\/06\/Picture3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20394\" style=\"width:640px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/669\/2025\/06\/Picture3.jpg 451w, https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/669\/2025\/06\/Picture3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image description: Adriana, Flic, Maddie and John at the first Wilder Kent Committee meeting<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a great place to talk about what else I would like to do, in this role and independently, at CCCU and beyond! I need to further solidify my voice in the community \u2013 CCCU and further; amplifying small actions of local people and campaigning for greater change to slow the climate crisis. I need to become more political, as sustainability is political! I want to create a safe space to contact our local representatives, <em>yell<\/em> and make some change \u2013 I hope that students can be at the forefront of this change, and I hope I see <em>you <\/em>there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you so much to Bethany, John and Everyone from Fg11 for empowering me to make a change, thank you to my fellow SGO members for being so kind and teaching me new things!
