So we gather here at the end of the month, and we read a list of good things that happened in the world recently. Because everything feels a little better when you know that other people care about this as much as you do and they\u2019re also doing something about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to feel better about the state of the world, settle in for the list below, or check out March\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/events\/2024\/eco-hope-weekly-stressless\"><strong>Eco Hope StressLess events<\/strong><\/a>(including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/events\/2024\/slow-fashion-fixes-and-patches-workshop\"><strong>clothes fixing workshop<\/strong><\/a>), which is like getting your Monthly Good News dopamine multiple times across the entirety of March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In support of the government\u2019s plans for a transition to net-zero, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2024\/feb\/22\/uk-quits-treaty-that-lets-fossil-fuel-firms-sue-governments-over-climate-policies\">the UK is withdrawing from the Energy Charter Treaty<\/a>, which allows fossil fuel companies to sue governments for profits lost due to climate policies. (Which. It is <em>insane <\/em>that such a policy existed in the first place.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2024\/feb\/17\/us-east-trees-warming-hole-study-climate-crisis#:~:text=While%20the%20US%2C%20like%20the,the%20unmistakable%20broader%20warming%20trend.\">Widespread reforestation efforts in eastern USA have allowed for a \u201cwarming hole\u201d<\/a> where temperatures have plateaued or cooled while the rest of the country increased in heat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/patient-safety\/marthas-rule\/#:~:text=The%20first%20phase%20of%20the,worried%20about%20a%20person's%20condition.\">English hospitals will be adopting \u201cMartha\u2019s Rule\u201d in April 2024<\/a>, which entitles patients to an emergency second opinion if their condition worsens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2024\/feb\/21\/four-day-week-made-permanent-for-most-uk-firms-in-worlds-biggest-trial#:~:text=Most%20of%20the%20UK%20companies,have%20made%20the%20change%20permanent.\">Of 61 UK organisations that took part in a four-day week trial, 54 are still operating the policy one year on<\/a>, and 31 have made the change permanent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2024\/feb\/22\/employers-must-make-reasonable-adjustments-for-women-going-through-menopause\">The UK\u2019s Equality and Human Rights Commission has issued new guidance to clarify the legal obligations firms have to menopausal workers<\/a>; it says that menopause symptoms can be considered a disability and \u201creasonable adjustments\u201d must be made.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2024\/02\/07\/unprecedented-collapse-in-eu-coal-and-gas-electricity-generation-last-year-report-reveals\">EU emissions nosedived<\/a> to levels not seen since The Beatles topped the charts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/environment\/china-clean-energy-01262024012445.html#:~:text=China's%20clean%20energy%20sector%20saw,nonprofit%20think%20tank%20has%20shown.\">The clean energy sector was the main driver of economic growth for China<\/a> in 2023<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A study by the Norway-based Food System Economics Commission suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/foodsystemeconomics.org\/policy\/global-policy-report\/\">a shift towards sustainable agriculture could bring up to \u00a37.9tr in economic benefits<\/a> annually<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lostrainforestsofbritain.org\/2023\/11\/29\/the-governments-temperate-rainforest-strategy-for-england-an-analysis\/\">The UK government has launched a national rainforest strategy<\/a> to plant 100,000 native trees in Devon, linking up fractured rainforest habitats in the country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.positive.news\/environment\/how-hedgerows-can-help-us-tackle-the-climate-crisis\/\">England\u2019s hedgerows would stretch almost ten times around the Earth if lined up end to end<\/a>, according to a new comprehensive map helping to inform the ecology research of these ecosystems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Somalia, one of the world\u2019s most gender unequal countries, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2024\/jan\/30\/somalia-to-launch-its-first-current-affairs-tv-show-led-by-women\">launching a current affairs show led by women<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happy-headlines.com\/blog-posts\/ireland-smashes-previous-wind-power-records\">Ireland smashes previous wind power records<\/a>; up 71% from the same month the year prior<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>See you next month!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Bethany Climpson, Sustainability Engagement Assistant<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You know the drill.
