These events are being coordinated by Dr Sonia Overall, Fiona MacDonald, Dr Andrew M. Butler and Dr Paul March-Russell.

Dr Sonia Overall (CCCU) is a Senior Lecturer in theSchool of Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Programme Lead for the MA in Creative Writing. A published novelist and poet, she uses psychogeographical approaches to reading and creating texts. Her public outreach work includes engaging readers with complex texts through creative, performative walks, exploring literary and imagined landscapes. Aside from numerous public walks and workshops, Sonia’s recent related projects include Walking Heritage (2016); ‘Walking with Riddley’ (2017); ‘O what we ben!’ (2017); and ‘R s for Riddley Walker’ (2019) in the CCCU Heritage A-Z. Sonia adapts and performs folk theatre with the Canterbury Hoodeners and has been a writer-performer with the puppet company The Theatre of the Small since 2001.  

Fiona MacDonald is an artist based in Kent who works with humans and nonhumans as Feral Practice to create art projects and interdisciplinary events that develop ethical and imaginative connection across species boundaries. They draw together artistic, curatorial and pedagogic processes, working with outdoor, gallery and educational settings. Recent exhibitions and performances include at The Bluecoat, Tate St Ives, Whitechapel Gallery, Invisible Dust, Taipei Biennale, Aalto University Helsinki, Whitstable Biennale, UNESCO Paris, PEER, Furtherfield. Fiona was curator of Standpoint Gallery 2006-2016, and director of Standpoint Futures residency programme 2010-2018.

Dr Andrew M. Butler (CCCU) is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Creative Arts and Industries. He is author of Solar Flares: Science Fiction in the 1970s (Liverpool University Press, 2011), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (BFI, 2014), “Human Subjects/Alien Objects? Abjection and the Constructions of Race and Racism in District 9” in Alien Imaginations (2015), “Sleeping/Waking: Politicizing the Sublime in Science Fiction Film Special Effects’ in Endangering Science Fiction Film (2015), as well as books on Philip K. Dick, Cyberpunk, Terry Pratchett, Postmodernism and Film Studies and articles or chapters on futurology, millennial British sf film, John Wyndham, Philip Pullman, Mary Doria Russell and Jack Womack. He is coeditor of The Routledge Companion to Science Fiction, Fifty Key Figures in Science Fiction and of the oldest academic journal devoted to sf, Extrapolation. He is the non-voting chair of judges for the Arthur C. Clarke Award. In his spare time, he investigates real ale and collects shiny trousers. His current work focuses on 1970s and 1980s SF, art as science fiction and science fiction film.

Dr Paul March-Russell (University of Kent) is a Lecturer in the School of European Culture and Languages with a directorial background in widening participation. He is Editor of Foundation: The International Review of Science Fiction and the commissioning editor for SF Storyworlds and has been a judge for the Arthur C. Clarke Award. Paul’s expertise in speculative fiction is combined with research in the role of storytelling and the poetics of landscape, ecocriticism and critical theory.
