International Student Lockdown Update.

We are committed to providing our international students with an outstanding education while ensuring your health, safety and wellbeing is our top priority.

We continue to monitor the current COVID-19 situation and follow government guidance.  Following our Prime Minister’s announcement this week we want to provide you with an update depending on your situation as follows:

If you are in the UK

We will continue to support those international students already in the UK in line with the latest government guidance.

Currently students studying medicine, health and social care, teacher education and social work can attend on campus face-to-face teaching if timetabled to do so. From 8 March these professional and practical programmes will also be allowed to return, as part of our blended learning approach for practical teaching, specialist facilities or on campus assessments, so that you can complete your year or award.

Please note that any students returning to on-campus face-to- face teaching need to follow the recommendations for COVID-19 asymptomatic testing.

For those not yet allowed to return to on campus face-to-face teaching, we will continue to deliver high quality online learning. In addition, the government has confirmed that all international students who are in the UK can access essential campus facilities, such as the Library, to support your studies during this time.

If you have not yet arrived in the UK

If students are not currently allowed to attend face-to-face teaching on campus then the advice is for them to stay where they are and access their learning online, until government guidance changes.

Those students who are on professional or practical programmes that need to attend on campus face-to-face teaching are encouraged to return to campus on or shortly after 8 March where possible. These students will be contacted by the International Team to check their travel arrangements and advise on the latest government entry requirements and restrictions. If there are any challenges or delays for these students returning to the UK then they will be asked to liaise with their Programme Director immediately regarding their options.

Visa and Immigration

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the government has implemented a number of immigration concessions to assist visa holders who have been impacted. For advice regarding visas and Graduate Route please email Ukvi.compliance@canterbury.ac.uk. Whenever you make a plan to enter the UK, please inform the compliance team via the above email.

Graduate Route
From summer 2021, international students completing undergraduate or master’s degrees will be able to benefit from two years’ work experience (three years for PhD graduates) in the UK upon successful completion of their course via the new Graduate immigration route. Please note for existing students to apply for the Graduate Route you need to have arrived back in the UK by 6 April 2021 and complete your final semester in the UK according to the current UKVI requirement. However, students should check additional entry requirements and restrictions that have been introduced due to COVID-19 before travelling to the UK and only travel when face-to-face teaching on campus for your programme has resumed. Students who commence a one-year Master’s programme in January 2021 will also remain eligible for the Graduate Route even if they are studying remotely, provided they enter the UK before 27 September 2021 and complete the final semester of their studies in the UK.

Keeping you informed

Most of your timetables are now available with any final adjustments being made by1 March, so you can plan ahead and see if and when you are required on campus.

In order to support you and keep you informed in relation to your specific situation it is important that you complete this form .

We will aim to issue a further update after Easter (April) following a planned government update.

In the meantime please remember whether in the UK or in your home country we provide a range of support for international students. For all other queries or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the International Team on international@canterbury.ac.uk .
