How will you make the most of your Academic Development Week?.

With the first month of the new academic year under your belt, this week is the perfect opportunity to take time to reflect on your learning so far, work out where you want to be and how you are going to get there – so that you can realise your full potential.

Our top tips for making the most of your Academic Development Week (25 -29 October) include:

  • Check out the Academic Development Hub
    The hub is full of support for your studies, ideas on how to make the most of your week, tips for your wellbeing and suggestions on how to broaden your horizons.
  • Explore the Learning Skills Hub
    The Learning Skills Hub offers a structured learning environment to develop your skills, providing you with the top tips, further resources and opportunities to review your learning.  The hub offers a range of modules including time management, referencing and writing assignments. There are also dedicated modules especially designed for your subject areas and you can book 1 to 1 tutorial with your the Learning Skills experts for your faculty.

Monday

  • IT Session, 9am – 11am, LG47
    Come along and meet the team who will be available to answer questions and also demonstrate the basics and various useful features in the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Careers Hub drop-in, 10am-12noon/2pm- 4pm, Augustine House
  • Student Support drop-ins, 12noon-1pm, Online via Blackboard
  • Disability drop-ins, 1-2pm, Cathedral Court, Medway
  • Microsoft Outlook Workshop, 1-3pm, Online, Book Here
    These Microsoft workshops are run in partnership with our IT training team, and are available in Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook. The workshops are great training to understand the software better, but also prepares you to take an exam if you choose to, that you can then put on your CV. If you pass 3 of the 4 exams, you can call yourself a Microsoft Specialist Associate!

Tuesday

  • Careers Hub drop-in, 10am-12noon/2pm- 4pm, Augustine House
  • Learning Skills Session drop-in, 12noon-2pm, Online via Blackboard
    Come and meet members of the Learning Skills Team who will be able to answer questions on our offer, share favourite resources and give advice on the best Learning Skills Hub modules to suit you.
  • Being a School Governor, 1-2pm, Online, Book Here
    Are you looking for ways to develop your professional skills, while giving something back to the community? By volunteering as a school governor, you can do both.  The student view bring so much to governing boards, not least a fresh perspective and a voice that may not otherwise be reflected.

    Come along and meet the team who will be available to answer questions and also demonstrate the basics and various useful features in the Microsoft Office suite.

  • Chooseday Chill, 5-7pm, Augustine House
    Relax over some free tea and toast and have a chat with other students and the Student Wellbeing team. You can play board games, try your hand at some crafts, have ago at ping pong, listen to music or just chill.

Wednesday

  • Disability Student Allowance and Learning Support Plan drop-ins for mental wellbeing, 10am – 3pm, Online via Blackboard
  • Carbon Literacy Training10am – 4:30pm, Mg19
    A one-day course that introduces you to your Carbon Footprint, what you can do to reduce it and your impact on the environment. Completion of the course (submission of a short, written component) results in a certificate from the Carbon Literacy Trust. Contact: sustainability@canterbury.ac.uk to book your place.

  • Discover our Sustainable Campus Walk, 1-1.45pm Starting at the Sustainability Yurt on Anselm Lawn
    Take part in a short, relaxed walk around our Canterbury Campus sustainability sites starting at 1pm from the Yurt on Anselm Lawn.
  • Make your CV shine, 1-2.30pm  Online, Book Here
    We’ll be giving advice and guidance on targeting your CV to the job/further study opportunity you are applying for. We’ll tell you about CV360, and other ways you can quickly and easily make a difference to your CV.

  • In Conversation with Professor Dame Elizabeth Nneka Anionwu, 4-5pm, Online, Book Here
    As part of our BH365 programme, Dame Elizabeth put a substantial amount of her life into her work as a nurse, health visitor and tutor working with black and minority ethnic communities in London.
  • Making Connections through Creativity, 4.30-6pm, AH3.31
    Join other students and work on creative projects and ideas in a quiet, reflective space. Get support from the Mental Wellbeing Team and other students in the group if you’re feeling a bit stressed, worried or unsettled. 
  • Gospel Choir, 7-9pm, Chapel
    Whether you want to join in or just listen everyone is welcome.

Thursday

  • Climate Action Day, 10am – 3.30pm, Old Session House
    Our climate action day is a chance to come together on issue regarding climate change and social injustice. Including an introduction to sustainability and COP26, climate activities, screenings, discussions, workshops. Includes Lunch and afternoon tea and cake. You can also join the Students’ Union Litter Pick from Old Sessions House from 11am.
  • Introduction to Postgraduate Study, 10-11.30am, ER0.03
