I&#8217;m rather fond if it myself, that idea of a cheerful state of being. In my mind it&#8217;s a step back from passion, elation or resounding joy, those more hedonic emotions that I flirt with occasionally, and sits in a eudemonic state of contentment and wellbeing. My happy place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Philosophers far greater than I could extend this discussion, and if you wanted to read more you might like to look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/happiness\/\">Standford Encyclopedia of Philosophy<\/a>, or for a broad selection of thought try <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philosophy_of_happiness\">Wikipedia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you are of a more practical mindset could I point you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionforhappiness.org\/\">Action for Happiness<\/a>? With Lord <a href=\"http:\/\/cep.lse.ac.uk\/_new\/staff\/person.asp?id=970\">Richard Layard<\/a> as its co-founder and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalailama.com\/\">Dalai Lama<\/a> as its Patron, it&#8217;s a charity of note and widespread influence. It&#8217;s motto is simple: &#8220;Spread Happiness&#8221;, and the website is stuffed full of resources and ideas to help us all do just that. Colleagues in my department will know I am fond of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionforhappiness.org\/calendars\">monthly calendars<\/a> which adorn our office fridge, when we are there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/staffdevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/602\/2020\/05\/may_2020-1024x724.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2325\" width=\"591\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/staffdevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/602\/2020\/05\/may_2020-1024x724.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/staffdevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/602\/2020\/05\/may_2020-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/staffdevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/602\/2020\/05\/may_2020-768x543.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/staffdevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/602\/2020\/05\/may_2020-1536x1086.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/staffdevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/602\/2020\/05\/may_2020-680x481.jpg 680w, https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/staffdevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/602\/2020\/05\/may_2020.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong &#8211; I have no desire to live in a world full of people blindly grinning; we need the shadow to appreciate the light.
