He also presented a paper on Geras\u2019 contribution to the idea of self-emancipation in Marxism.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Dr Sarah Lieberman was also busy, attending the 1<sup>st<\/sup> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uaces.org\/events\/teaching\/\">European Conference on Teaching and Learning Politics, International Relations and European Studies<\/a>, in Maastricht, and giving a paper at the UACES Conference in Cork on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uaces.org\/events\/conferences\/cork\/papers\/abstract.php?paper_id=486#.VCwF-_k7t8E\">regulation of food by the EU and supermarkets<\/a>. In addition to Sarah, Dr Andre Barrinha (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uaces.org\/events\/conferences\/cork\/papers\/abstract.php?paper_id=146#.VCwF0vk7t8E\">European cybersecurity<\/a>), Dr Soeren Keil (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uaces.org\/events\/conferences\/cork\/papers\/abstract.php?paper_id=218#.VCwF6vk7t8E\">Politics in the Balkans<\/a>) and our new Jean Monnet Professor, Dr Amelia Hadfield (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uaces.org\/events\/conferences\/cork\/papers\/abstract.php?paper_id=353#.VCwFt_k7t8E\">European foreign policy<\/a>\u00a0and EU education policy) all presented papers at this conference.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">For Amelia, this was a particularly eventful\u00a0summer. In July she gave a Keynote speaker at the Chancellor\u2019s Colloquium, celebrating the 225<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary of her alma mater, University of King\u2019s College, Canada\u2019s oldest seat of learning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/canterburypolitics.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/amelia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-969\" src=\"https:\/\/canterburypolitics.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/amelia.jpg\" alt=\"Amelia\" width=\"444\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As well as doing some consultancy on energy security for various European think tanks, most of her summer was taken up with REIF-funded research on the wide-ranging topic of sovereignty, carving out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/energyandgovernance\">Energy &amp; Governance group<\/a>, and putting together the various Jean Monnet Chair activities, commencing in and throughout autumn 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Andre was involved in two other research events during the summer. He set up, together with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aston.ac.uk\/lss\/staff-directory\/helenafarrand-carrapico\/\">Helena Carrapico<\/a> from Aston University, a workshop in Lisbon on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ces.uc.pt\/eventos\/index.php?id=10329&amp;id_lingua=1\">European Cybersecurity<\/a>, sponsored by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and he presented a paper on neoliberalism and cyberterrorism at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntu.ac.uk\/apps\/events\/15\/home.aspx\/event\/159651\/default\/the_annual_bisa_critical_studies_on_terrorism_working_group_conference_2014\">BISA Critical Studies on Terrorism Conference<\/a> in Nottingham.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-970\" src=\"https:\/\/canterburypolitics.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/andre.jpg\" alt=\"Andre\" width=\"439\" height=\"263\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">During this period he was also involved in the publication of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peacebuilding.no\/Themes\/Emerging-powers\/Publications\/The-discursive-articulation-of-the-concept-of-the-rising-power-perceptions-stances-and-interests-in-Brazil-Russia-and-Turkey\">Research Paper<\/a> for the Norwegian Peacebuilding Resource Centre on Emerging Powers, and of a\u00a0book chapter (&#8220;Dealing with Risk: Precision Strikes and Interventionism in the Obama Administration&#8221;) for the edited volume <a href=\"http:\/\/www.routledge.com\/books\/details\/9780415730204\/\">Precision Strike Warfare and International Intervention<\/a>, published by Routledge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In addition to the UACES conference, Soeren participated in the IPSA World Congress, presenting a paper on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsa.org\/my-ipsa\/events\/montreal2014\/paper\/citizenship-and-contested-politics-bosnia-and-herzegovina\">Citizenship education in Bosnia and Herzegovina<\/a>, as part of a panel on Citizenship education in new and old federations he organised together with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pol.ulaval.ca\/?pid=224\">Prof Guy Laforest<\/a> (Universit\u00e9 Laval).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Finally, Dr Mark Bennister and Dr Laura Cashman were active in the ECPR general conference that took place in Glasgow in early September. Mark presented a co-authored paper on <a href=\"http:\/\/ecpr.eu\/events\/paperdetails.aspx?paperid=20614&amp;eventid=14\">prime ministerial accountability to parliament<\/a> and Laura presented a paper co-authored with Dr John FitzGibbon on <a href=\"http:\/\/ecpr.eu\/events\/paperdetails.aspx?paperid=20468&amp;eventid=14\">populism and anti-romani sentiment in Europe<\/a>.
