{"id":650,"date":"2014-06-04T19:58:30","date_gmt":"2014-06-04T19:58:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/canterburypolitics.wordpress.com\/?p=650"},"modified":"2014-06-04T19:58:30","modified_gmt":"2014-06-04T19:58:30","slug":"canterbury-politics-student-launches-video-to-stop-bullying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/politics\/2014\/06\/04\/canterbury-politics-student-launches-video-to-stop-bullying\/","title":{"rendered":"Canterbury Politics Student Launches Video to Stop Bullying"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">Canterbury Politics student Tamanna Miah, 20, wants more people to recognise the damaging effects of such discrimination.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">So Tamanna teamed up with Fixers \u2013 the national charity that supports young people aged 16-25 to tackle any issue that matters to them, however they choose \u2013 for help to achieve her goal.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">A report about her campaign will feature on ITV News London\u00a0on Thursday 5 June from 6pm and ITV News Meridian on 12th June.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">Tamanna said: \u201cWhen I was growing up, I was the only Asian kid in town. There was a group of girls who turned against me.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u201cI used to get physically abused, emotionally abused and they\u2019d call me names. I felt alone and worthless. I used to ask myself, \u201cWhy am I the colour that I am?\u201d and \u201cWhy am I not the same as everyone else?\u201d\u2019<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">With the help of Fixers, Tamanna and her team have made a film to show what it is like to be the target of racist bullying.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">To watch Tamanna\u2019s Fixer film please click:\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1ndsuS4\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/1ndsuS4<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">The message behind the film is that racial abuse does not always have to be physical to leave scars.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">Tamanna said: \u201cWe are trying to say in our film that any kind of abuse, whether it\u2019s physical or verbal, can be harmful, just as hitting someone can be harmful.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u201cIt can affect you mentally and emotionally. It can really do a lot of damage.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">Steve Goodsell, Regional Manager for Show Racism the Red Card, supports Tamanna\u2019s Fixers campaign.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">Steve said: \u201cThere were over 80,000 incidents of racial bullying reported in schools between 2007 and 2011 and Childline reported a 69 per cent increase in racist bullying calls made to them \u2013 so it is a growing problem.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/canterburypolitics.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/06\/tamanna-and-friends-with-simon-raikes.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-655\" class=\"size-full wp-image\" src=\"http:\/\/canterburypolitics.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/06\/tamanna-and-friends-with-simon-raikes.jpg?w=650\" alt=\"Image\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>(Tamanna is third from left!)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">The Mayor of Sevenoaks, Councillor Simon Raikes, also supporting the campaign attended the film\u2019s official launch event.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">He said: \u201cI think the film is very powerful. It gives you a visual demonstration of just how damaging mental cruelty and mental bullying can be.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">Tamanna hopes to use her film to target those who may be tempted to bully. She wants to show them the impact that their actions could have and hopefully make them think twice.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u201cI\u2019d be happy if after seeing my film young people would look beyond someone\u2019s skin colour and value them for who they really are,\u201d she said<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif\">Fixers works with young people across the UK. Each Fixer is supported by the charity\u2019s team of in-house creative professionals to produce a resource to get their chosen message across.
