The main event was a guided tour of the Resistance exhibition at the Turner Contemporary. This fantastic exhibition was conceived and curated by artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen. It showcases 100 years of activism in the UK from the suffragettes to the anti-Iraq war protests.

The focus was on the time before smart phones and in the exhibition consideration is given to how the camera was used to both promote the protesters’ causes and also as a tool of surveillance against them. With images depicting famous scenes familiar to everyone and also those from moments now forgotten, it sparked many conversations about the history of Britain and its culture of political action. Perhaps not as flashy as the French, but effective nonetheless.

We also also had a peek at the Shell Grotto (so strange!) and despite the grey weather a certain professor also treated himself to an ice cream.

Taking learning out of the classroom always helps to bring new perspectives.
