On 27 February Professor David Bates and Dr Laura Cashman went on a trip to Margate with a group of our undergraduate and postgraduate students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The trip was organised by colleagues in Arts and Culture and it was a great opportunity for our students to make connections between art and politics and to explore the political power of art. The main event was a guided tour of the Resistance exhibition at the Turner Contemporary<\/a>. This fantastic exhibition was conceived and curated by artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen. It showcases 100 years of activism in the UK from the suffragettes to the anti-Iraq war protests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The focus was on the time before smart phones and in the exhibition consideration is given to how the camera was used to both promote the protesters’ causes and also as a tool of surveillance against them. With images depicting famous scenes familiar to everyone and also those from moments now forgotten, it sparked many conversations about the history of Britain and its culture of political action. Perhaps not as flashy as the French, but effective nonetheless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also also had a peek at the Shell Grotto (so strange!) and despite the grey weather a certain professor also treated himself to an ice cream. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking learning out of the classroom always helps to bring new perspectives. Students had a chance to engage with others from different year groups and pathways. It was also great to get some sea air, although some sunshine would have been welcome too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
