It is with great pleasure that we can announce that Professor Bertrand Badie (Professor, Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris) will give the annual European Review of International Relations (ERIS) lecture on the topic of”Humiliation in International Relations” (For more details on ERIS, see: http://www.erisjournal.eu/index-About_us.html).
Last 30 September, Dr Amelia Hadfield, along with her interns James Mohajer and Shayne Halfpenny-Ray, presented the findings of the summer 2015 research project, funded by the Research & Enterprise Development Centre (RED), at the university-wide research internship poster session in Augustine Hall.
Dr David Bates (Director of Politics and International Relations) was at the House of Lords on 15 October to celebrate the publication of Marxism, Religion and Ideology: Themes from David McLellan. Dr Bates edited the book with Dr Iain MacKenzie and Professor Sean Sayers from the University of Kent.
European Outreach: CCCU Centre for European Studies Runs Its First Jean Monnet Junior Day for 50+ Local Sixth Form Students
On 9th of October, 2015, our newly-established Jean Monnet Centre for European Studies (CEFEUS) organised and hosted its first “Jean Monnet Junior Day” for 6th form students. Three schools from different districts of County Kent took part: the Canterbury Academy,the Rochester-based Thomas Aveling School, and the Chatham and Clarendon Grammar School, in Ramsgate.
The Politics and International Relations Programme at Canterbury Christ Church University organised the event “A Tragedy at Europe’s Shores – A Debate on the current Refugee Crisis” as part of its Making Politics Matter speaker series on the 30th of September 2015.

To avoid any ambiguity in what I am about to say, I want simply to insist that ‘yes we have a duty to help refugees’. Of course few – at least expressly – would disagree with this.
I also want to insist that our duty of aid goes well beyond refugees. Western liberal democratic states have a duty to help asylum seekers, refugees and economic migrants.
