Choreography as Education:

An examination of creativity through a choreographic toolkit in Chinese and UK contexts

Speaker: Yifeng Zhu, CCCU

This presentation will talk about the creative process through analysing the development of a choreographic toolkit as an educational model in Chinese and UK contexts.

It will show how the action research involved in practice-based approach was used to designing a toolkit of teaching choreography called “SSS”. “SSS” in this study represents the three ways of teaching choreography: studio-based, site-sensitive and site-specific.

Also, it will explore how the various literature of teaching and learning choreography between China and UK leads Yifeng Zhu to consider why creativity is an important factor in the choreographic process and how to enhance creativity. It will also explore how Yifeng Zhu took on multiple roles in the research: creative researcher, teacher and practitioner.

Yifeng Zhu is from China and a PhD student researching in Choreography as Education from within Performing Art at Canterbury Christ Church University, UK. Yifeng has a Master of Fine Arts in Choreography (Southwest University for Nationalities (2018), a Master of Dance Science & Education with Merit (University of Edinburgh, 2017) and Bachelor of Arts in Dance (Beijing Normal University (Project 985 & 211, 2014).
