The&nbsp;classmark&nbsp;is a series of numbers followed by three letters, which is the start of the author\u2019s last name or the book\u2019s title,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example: Cottrell, S. (2013)\u202f<em>The study skills handbook.\u202f<\/em>Basingstoke: Palgrave. We have a handy\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/guides\/library\/library-guide-librarysearch-quick-start-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>quick-start guide<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 3 \u2013 Check the loan period<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As well as the&nbsp;classmark,&nbsp;you\u2019ll&nbsp;need to know the loan period of the item. The information is held in the<strong>\u202floan\u202ftype<\/strong>\u202fcolumn in&nbsp;LibrarySearch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may not seem important at first glance but knowing the loan period of the books you are looking for,&nbsp;determines&nbsp;what shelves they will be on in Augustine House. The 7-day loans will be found on the open shelves all down the room on floors one, two and three. Whereas the 4-week loan books are on the moving shelves at the back of floors one, two, and three.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Using the moving shelves at Augustine House Library<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below is a quick guide, using the moving shelves at Augustine House Library, Canterbury:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"How to use the moving shelves in Augustine House\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NvC_kG3cQsc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Using the moving shelves accessed via YouTube, Canterbury Christ Church University Libraries.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For items from Salomons Institute Library and Drill Hall Library, books are interfiled but&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;always worth knowing how long you can loan your book for, so please check before you leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 4 \u2013 Understanding the&nbsp;classmark<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that you know the&nbsp;classmark&nbsp;and the loan period of the books&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;looking for, you are&nbsp;almost there. The&nbsp;final step&nbsp;is to use that&nbsp;classmark&nbsp;to find the\u202fitems on the shelves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Classmarks&nbsp;are signposted at the end of each bookshelf, and each book has a sticker with its&nbsp;classmark&nbsp;on the spine. The bookshelves will be in numerical order and\u202fin Augustine House,\u202fthe sequence goes up from floors one to three. Still confused?\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/638\/2024\/09\/How-to-Understand-a-Classmark.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>This visual guide might help<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A different classification system is used at the Salomons Institute Library but the&nbsp;methodology&nbsp;of finding books is&nbsp;very similar. At Salomons&nbsp;you\u2019ll&nbsp;still need to follow the books in alphabetical and numerical order.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By following these&nbsp;steps&nbsp;you should have found your book! Now you can borrow the book and get studying.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Still need help?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, if you still\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0find your book after following these steps just visit the Library Point at any of our libraries for help. At Medway, ask a member of staff at the Helpdesk near the library entrance.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Help pods<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Augustine House you can also use the phones which are&nbsp;located&nbsp;on floors 1 and 2.
