{"id":64026,"date":"2024-10-18T14:23:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-18T13:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/library\/?p=64026"},"modified":"2024-10-08T14:42:50","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T13:42:50","slug":"rights-retention-for-open-access-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/library\/rights-retention-for-open-access-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Rights retention for open access research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Many research funders have adopted a \u2018rights retention\u2019 approach to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/library-services\/support-my-research\/open-access\" title=\"\">open access<\/a>. This aims to ensure researchers retain sufficient reuse rights over their work, to meet open access requirements.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any researcher can follow this approach, whether or not they receive specific funding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the growth of the open access movement, a significant amount of publicly-funded research is still only available via publisher paywalls, which limits access to research and slows down the research cycle. Therefore, researchers and their funders have started to look for other ways to open this research to all.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wherever possible, CCCU signs up for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/library-services\/support-my-research\/transformative-agreements-for-open-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agreements<\/a>&nbsp;that enable our researchers to publish open access in their journal of choice. Unfortunately, not all publishers offer routes to publishing that are aligned with funder requirements, and some existing agreements are unaffordable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, publishers are not automatically entitled to take all rights away from researchers. Researchers have a choice about whether to sign copyright away.\u00a0Retaining researchers\u2019 rights ensures that their work can be made open access through deposit in a repository on acceptance, without embargo.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/asset-library\/open-access-policy-2023.pdf\" title=\"\">CCCU open access policy <\/a>states:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><\/p>\n<cite>\u201cAuthors may consider including a rights retention statement when submitting an article for publication. This allows authors to post the author accepted manuscript (AAM) in institutional or other repositories with no embargo, share it among colleagues, and use it in their own teaching.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can authors do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you submit an article, include the following rights retention statement in your cover letter and acknowledgements:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><\/p>\n<cite><em>&#8216;For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission.\u2019<\/em>\u00a0<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Deposit the author accepted manuscript in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/researchspace.canterbury.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research Space Repository<\/a>. Provided the rights retention statement is present, this will ensure a Creative Commons (CC BY) licence is applied, and the manuscript will be made available on the repository with zero embargo.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there is no need to do so, you can\u00a0make enquiries with publishers before submitting an article containing the rights retention statement. If your research is funded by one of the below funders, it is recommended to add the rights retention statement to all manuscript submissions, even if the article will eventually be open access via the publisher.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Any researcher.<\/strong>&nbsp;This approach supports the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/library-services\/support-my-research\/open-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University\u2019s preference for immediate \u2018green\u2019 open access via Research Space<\/a>, therefore ensuring the benefits of open access are shared equitably.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Funders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many research funders have adopted a \u2018rights retention\u2019 approach to support open access. This aims to ensure researchers retain sufficient reuse rights to meet open access requirements.
