For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prompt and widespread dissemination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased citations: research has shown that open access articles are cited more frequently than those that can only be accessed via paywalls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Efficiency gains in the research process through easy access to previous research.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhanced profile through the availability of an individual\u2019s research output in one place.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased public understanding and access to research.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Innovation, practice development and economic growth driven by access to the latest research.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social justice! Making research open access means that anyone with an internet connection can access the research they need free of charge. This can make a big difference to people\u2019s:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Employment and educational prospects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Community and social development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health care<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most research is funded by public money, and therefore it should be publicly available. Yet, most people do not have access to most research. This applies to all AAMs and is your \u2018safety net\u2019, it ensures that your article will comply.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must apply a CC BY licence to your article (with CC BY ND allowed in some exceptional cases)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must create a Data Access Statement, even where there are no data associated with the article or the data are inaccessible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MRC and BBSRC biomedical research articles that acknowledge this funding will be archived in Europe PubMed Central.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Articles can include third-party materials (such as images, photographs or maps) that are subject to a more restrictive licence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a collections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Books, chapters or edited collections published on or after 1 January 2024 must be\u00a0<strong>published<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Open Access or available in a repository (e.g. Research Space) within 12 months of publication.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They can be published as an Open Access item or be deposited as an Author Accepted Manuscript in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/repository.canterbury.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research Space Repository<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They must use a CC BY licence that allows the reader to search for and reuse content, subject to proper attribution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They should include images, illustrations, tables, photographs, diagrams, maps and other supporting content where possible, but these third-party materials are allowed to be made available under a more restrictive licence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exceptions will be permitted, for example if there are problems related to obtaining permission for re-use of third party material, or if an appropriate publisher is unable to offer an Open Access option that complies with UKRI\u2019s policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Textbooks, scholarly editions, exhibition catalogues, trade books and fictional works are excluded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a class=\"wp-block-heading\">What UKRI funded researchers need to do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You must keep a digital copy of the Author Accepted Manuscript version of your work and deposit it in Research Space Repository upon acceptance. Contact&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:repository@canterbury.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repository@canterbury.ac.uk&nbsp;<\/a>and we&#8217;ll help you assign the 12 month embargo. This provides you with a \u201csafety net\u201d of free Open Access that is sufficient to meet the requirements. See point 16 of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/publications\/ukri-open-access-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UKRI policy<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From 2024 onwards a central grant will be available. Page 5 of the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/publications\/ukri-open-access-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UKRI policy<\/a>\u202fstates: &#8220;UKRI will provide an Open Access Block Grant\u202fto support compliance with this policy for both research articles and in-scope longform publications&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must apply a CC BY licence to your work (with CC BY ND allowed in some exceptional cases)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware of the need to make your work openly available online when dealing with material for which you don&#8217;t own the copyright. This&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/guides\/deposit-your-thesis\/copyright-or-sensitive-material-in-your-thesis\">checklist about use of third party copyright material<\/a>\u202fthat University of Kent produced for postgraduates may be helpful.\u202f When seeking permission to use third party copyright material, state that it will be available online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bear in mind that some UKRI block grant funding will be available to publish Open Access online.
