{"id":565,"date":"2019-06-07T09:31:34","date_gmt":"2019-06-07T08:31:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/facultyofeducation\/?p=565"},"modified":"2019-06-13T16:00:17","modified_gmt":"2019-06-13T15:00:17","slug":"faculty-alumna-wins-the-alumni-of-the-year-award-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/facultyofeducation\/faculty-alumna-wins-the-alumni-of-the-year-award-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty alumna wins the Alumni of the Year Award 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jo Williamson (Warnock), a graduate of the CCCU Primary Education programme, has won the Alumni of the Year Award, she says:&#8221;I am delighted to have won this years CCCU Alumni award.  Having graduated from CCCU in 2001 as a primary school teacher, 11 years later I went on to become the Headteacher of a local primary school, St John&#8217;s Church of England.  I have been Headteacher since 2012 and during this time the school has worked closely with CCCU.  It is such a privilege to support the University, as for me it was a life changing place and holds many special memories.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jo is the Headmistress of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stjohns-canterbury.kent.sch.uk\/\">St John\u2019s Church of England Primary School in Canterbury<\/a>.  She is described by her nominees as \u201can exceptional alumna, who willingly offers both her own, and her school\u2019s, time to support Christ Church through a wide range of activities.\u201d These have included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>regularly assisting in the recruitment interviewing process for prospective students.<\/li>\n<li>leading a workshop at the Faculty of Education Newly Qualified Teachers (NQT) conference around teacher wellbeing.<\/li>\n<li>contributing to teaching on the BA Year 1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/study-here\/courses\/undergraduate\/primary-education-19-20.aspx\">Primary Education<\/a> module.<\/li>\n<li>rethinking teaching, learning and assessment when she was part of a headteachers\u2019 roundtable.<\/li>\n<li>serving on the Faculty of Education\u2019s Partnership Executive Committee.<\/li>\n<li>being heavily involved with the revalidation of the Primary Education programmes, both BA and PGCE, giving guidance as to the relevant school-based content for the new modules.<\/li>\n<li>offering large numbers of student placements at her school, where the Faculty can be confident that students\u2019 progress and development will be expertly mentored and supported. There are currently 14 Christ Church students based at St John\u2019s. Last year, Jo offered three Christ Church NQTs teaching positions in her school. There is strong evidence that indicates that the support and mentoring they are receiving is ensuring a successful NQT year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_617\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-617\" style=\"width: 680px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/facultyofeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/637\/2019\/06\/stjohns.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"454\" class=\"size-full wp-image-617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/facultyofeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/637\/2019\/06\/stjohns.jpg 680w, https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/facultyofeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/637\/2019\/06\/stjohns-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-617\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jo Williamson with Harriet Burrowes and Katie Gravenor from St John&#8217;s Primary.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nJo has carried this commitment through with great determination, even when her school faced difficult and complex circumstances. During this time, Jo devised a highly creative approach that enabled Christ Church students to volunteer their time to engage with children\u2019s learning through a structured reading mentor programme. This both supported the children\u2019s development and our students\u2019 understanding of the importance of a reading curriculum tailored to individual children\u2019s needs. It gave me such a good starting block in my career. I still feel part of of the CCCU community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Faculty of Education is so proud of Jo and thanks her for all she does.
