{"id":293,"date":"2018-10-05T09:39:17","date_gmt":"2018-10-05T08:39:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/facultyofeducation\/?p=293"},"modified":"2018-11-02T11:06:52","modified_gmt":"2018-11-02T11:06:52","slug":"sustaining-a-career-in-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/facultyofeducation\/sustaining-a-career-in-teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustaining a Career in Teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-298\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/facultyofeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/637\/2018\/10\/4Forest-school-3-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/facultyofeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/637\/2018\/10\/4Forest-school-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/facultyofeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/637\/2018\/10\/4Forest-school-3.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a lot in the media about the alarming numbers of teachers who leave the profession, particularly within the first five years.\u00a0 Whilst the reasons for this are real and need to be addressed at a national level, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/events\/world-teachers-day-2018-international-conference\"><strong>World Teacher Day<\/strong><\/a> seems a good opportunity to reflect on how I have sustained a career in teaching for more than thirty years and how the lessons I\u2019ve learned might be of help to others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have a clear set of values<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think it is important to have a clear set of values that underpin what we do as teachers.\u00a0 For me there has always been a moral imperative: children only get one go at education and we know that education is key to maximising life chances, so we have to ensure we provide the best education we can. This core belief sustained me at difficult times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Control the Controllable<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many external pressures on teachers, whether from the national agenda or from school leadership teams, and these can be demoralising.\u00a0 It took me quite a while to understand that there was no point dwelling on things that were outside my sphere of influence.\u00a0 Instead, I learned to focus on the things I <em>could<\/em> influence; the relationships I built with classes and colleagues; the way I planned my learning experiences; the way I conducted myself as a professional; and, later, the way I led teams.\u00a0 In short, I learned to control the controllable and let go of everything else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be a Lifelong Learner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I moved into senior leadership my brief was Staff Development \u2013 and what a privilege it was!\u00a0 Whatever your role in school it\u2019s really important that you continue to learn and develop so that your outlook and teaching remain informed and are re-energised.\u00a0 Different schools approach the development of staff in different ways, but there are now so many opportunities to engage with professional development independently.\u00a0 For me, the opportunities provided by The Chartered College of Teaching, the rise of TeachMeets and the \u201cfriends\u201d I have made on Twitter have been transformational.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Look After Your Wellbeing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We know that teaching will take every hour of the day if we allow it to, but, as a friend and colleague says, \u201cYou can\u2019t pour from an empty jug\u201d.\u00a0 It is essential that we attend to our own wellbeing and make time for relaxation, hobbies, family and friends.\u00a0 It takes some courage at first, but block out specific time in the evenings and\/or at the weekend: you will be in a better place as a result.
