Canterbury Christ Church\nUniversity Director of the Cyber Innovation Hub, Dr Abhaya Induruwa was\nrecently presented with the Lanka Experimental Academic and Research Network\n(LEARN) Founder Award for pioneering LEARN and \u200bInternet in Sri Lanka. The award was presented to Abhaya\nby His Excellency \u200bMaithripala\nSirisena, the President \u200bof Sri Lanka, on 7th<\/sup> October\n2019 at the Shangri La hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka.  \u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The award was presented\nduring the 30 year anniversary celebrations \u200bof\nLEARN and \u200brecognises Abhaya\u2019s\nleadership in the creation of academic and research networking infrastructure in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LEARN was originally\nproposed to the government of Sri Lanka in 1989 by Abhaya through\nthe University Grants Commission and Ministry of Higher Education, Science\n& Technology. The proposal was for a network that would connect every\nuniversity and research\ncentre in the country. At the time the Internet did not exist\n\u200bin Sri Lanka\nand networked computing was still in its infancy, however in 1990, under the\nleadership of \u200bDr. Abhaya Induruwa, the Lanka Experimental Academic and\nResearch Network was created, which \u200btoday connects\nmore than 75 universities and research institutions in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2014, Abhaya was\ninducted to the Internet Hall of Fame, an honorary lifetime achievement award\nadministered by the Internet Society.<\/strong> He\nhas also previously received a Lifetime\nAchievement Award<\/a> by Sri Lanka Telecom,  \u201cin recognition of the\nyeomen contribution he has made to the computer education sector and data\ncommunication industry over the years by pioneering ICT education and by\nplaying a pivotal role in the deployment of the Internet in Sri Lanka\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
