{"id":1042,"date":"2020-04-17T13:22:41","date_gmt":"2020-04-17T12:22:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/engineering\/?p=1042"},"modified":"2022-01-20T10:41:24","modified_gmt":"2022-01-20T10:41:24","slug":"engineers-support-the-national-drive-to-print-3d-visors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/engineering\/engineers-support-the-national-drive-to-print-3d-visors\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineers support the national drive to print 3D visors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The University\u2019s\nKent and Medway Engineering, Design, Growth and Enterprise (EDGE) Hub team has\nbeen responding to the Covid-19 crisis by developing solutions for the urgent\nproduction of essential personal protective equipment (PPE) to support nurses,\nGPs, care-workers, parole officers, and other key frontline workers in the\nfight against the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Salman Saeidlou,\nSenior Lecturer in Mechanical\/Material Engineering and Soumya Manna, Lecturer\nin Design Engineering, have been applying a CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement,\nOperate) approach to a prototype three-part open source PPE visor design that\nwould enable the small 3D printer community to contribute to the nationwide\nefforts. The designs have been given to 3DCrowd UK, a community of 3D printer owners who\nare volunteering to print these face shields to trial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-3 \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The visors cover the\nface with a transparent shield, protecting the wearer from potentially\ninfectious droplets being absorbed through the face and allowing them to continue\ncrucial face-to-face work, such as healthcare and essential services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 9,000 visors have been requested\nacross Kent, and originally only eight volunteers were actively producing the\nvisors at an average production rate of seven and half per day. Through the\nUniversity\u2019s STEM Hub, the Engineering team has called out to all the STEM\ncontacts across the South East with small and large 3D printers to assist the\ncollective effort in producing the visors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This resulted in 199 volunteers registered across Kent, including Chatham and Clarendon Grammar School who are now producing over 10,000 per week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The school designed, with medics, a mass manufacture solution using PET sheets made from recycled bottles. They have setup a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/chatham-and-clarendon-grammar-visors-for-nhs\">GoFundMe page<\/a> to support the school&#8217;s production of PET sheets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Anne Nortcliffe, Head of the School of Engineering, Technology and Design, is supporting the co-ordination of visors produced by volunteers across East Kent for the local community in Kent and further afield across the UK.
