Use the printer or bin furthest away

When Natalie, the Move More Coordinator, asked me to participate in the Move More blog, I was confident I already did many of the tips on the list, so she suggested I could try this one:

USE THE PRINTER OR BIN FURTHEST AWAY

This means always choosing to walk further to the bin, printer, toilet… any facilities you use at work! Working at the Sports Centre means it is very easy to make the Move More tips part of your day. Move More is a Christ Church Sport initiative so it is really supported at work! Even so, remembering to go to the bin that’s down the corridor instead of right next to my desk takes a bit of getting used to. I can’t say I haven’t forgotten a few times.

It’s been nice to be able to get up from my desk and have a quick wander. Not only does it mean I Move More, but I also get to spend a bit of time away from the computer, and return feeling refreshed, which I think has had a positive impact on my work!

This week has been my first week participating in Move More, and what really surprised me is how often I do choose the lazier option. I like to think of myself as an active person, I have trained and work as a professional dancer, I love yoga, swimming, walking, running and training… But I don’t move as much as I think! When Natalie asked me to write for this blog I thought it would be a doddle – I thought I was already pretty active. This week, having Move More in mind, I noticed when I stand on an escalator, how I always look for a seat, when I get the bus to the station instead of walking or cycling. I’ve started to see where the Move More tips can fit into my life, and I’m excited about it!

NEXT WEEK: Moving every hour!
