{"id":2110,"date":"2017-05-03T16:38:13","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T15:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/careers\/?p=2110"},"modified":"2017-09-05T08:53:33","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T07:53:33","slug":"photography-competition-win-a-share-of-5000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/careers\/photography-competition-win-a-share-of-5000\/","title":{"rendered":"Photography Competition &#8211; Win a Share of \u00a35000"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Photographers challenged to look beyond so-called \u2018red tape\u2019 this Workers\u2019 Memorial Day<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>To mark International Workers\u2019 Memorial Day 2017, campaigning law firm Thompsons Solicitors has launched a national photography competition to highlight, and defend, the vital protections which keep workers safe.<\/p>\n<p>Budding photographers will have a chance to win a share of \u00a35,000 and feature in an exhibition at the People\u2019s History Museum.<\/p>\n<p>The competition will run until 28 June, after which a panel of judges will decide the winners. Entrants should seek to capture an image which explores one or more of the following themes:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; what \u2018health and safety\u2019 means to me<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; why I think \u2018health and safety\u2019 is important<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; why \u2018health and safety\u2019 is neither a burden, nor \u201cred tape\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; why I think \u2018health and safety\u2019 should be protected<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The competition launch coincided with International Worker\u2019s Memorial Day, a day which commemorates workers who have lost their lives as a result of dangerous working conditions, and draws attention to harmful practices in workplaces across the world.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2114\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.canterbury.ac.uk\/careers\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/506\/2017\/05\/Tom-Jones-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"454\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCritics like to dismiss health and safety as \u2018red tape\u2019, but it\u2019s this so-called \u2018red tape\u2019 which is usually just planning and common sense that helps to make our workplaces safe and ensures that employees return home to their families at the end of the working day,\u201d said Tom Jones, head of policy at Thompsons Solicitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith a General Election going on and Brexit on the horizon, the basic building blocks that ensure a safe place of work are under threat as never before. As accident at work specialists, whether it\u2019s the hazard of a trailing cable in an office, asbestos exposure in a store room or a truck reversing without thought, we see the impact on individuals and their families when health and safety slips off the agenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThompsons is launching this competition, and later, an exhibition, to show what health and safety really means and how important it is day to day. We want budding photographers from across the UK to use their cameras and creativity to show why health and safety is not a burden, but something every worker deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The competition closes\u00a028th June.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Photographs should be submitted at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thompsons.law\/focus\">www.thompsons.law\/focus<\/a>.The winners of the competition will be awarded a share of \u00a35,000, and have their artwork displayed at an exhibition in the People\u2019s History Museum in Manchester. No participant should put themselves at risk of injury, prosecution or other detriment in pursuit of an entry.
