This week, we&#8217;ll discuss how exactly you develop them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How do you develop these skills?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To develop your&nbsp;adaptability&nbsp;you need to take three key steps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Reflect<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>To improve your&nbsp;adaptability&nbsp;you&nbsp;first of all&nbsp;have to&nbsp;grow your understanding of the skills you already have and your natural ability to adapt. This includes reflecting on:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How you tend to react to change&nbsp;<\/li><li>Your proficiency in the four skills mentioned above&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Thinking back to instances in which you needed to be flexible or adaptable, whether that was in a previous role, as part of your studies or in a general life setting, can also help you to get some perspective on your skill level.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><li><strong>Adjust your attitude<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Being adaptable is first and foremost about having the right attitude. It\u2019s one in which you look&nbsp;favourably&nbsp;upon change, rather than seeing it as a distraction or nuisance, and welcome it as an opportunity for learning and development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\"><li><strong>Develop your skillset&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>People who are curious and are continually learning and finding new ways to broaden their skillset are more adaptable, simply because they are more versatile in their abilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a well-rounded set of core workplace skills is key, so this might be:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Having strong research skills coupled with the ability to\u00a0analyse\u00a0the information and additionally present that information to others<\/li><li>Having a strong attention to detail and the ability to look at the big picture<\/li><li>Being able to communicate with people from different backgrounds<\/li><li>The ability to effectively solve problems.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not about having a scattergun approach to learning new skills, but about:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Your ability to\u00a0recognise\u00a0the skills you need the most\u00a0<\/li><li>Your ability to keep developing yourself and adapting to new circumstances\u00a0<\/li><li>Your drive to fill any gaps when you come across them.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Showing you can do it when it comes to job applications:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just saying you\u2019re adaptable or flexible on your CV won\u2019t mean much to a hiring manager.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To really get your ability across, give examples of when you needed to adapt or be flexible in your experiences.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could do this or may have done this through:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Taking on new work experiences, volunteering, placements and internships\u00a0<\/li><li>Living, studying, working or travelling abroad\u00a0<\/li><li>Combining study with part-time work and personal commitments\u00a0<\/li><li>Successfully taking on new responsibilities in a previous role\u00a0<\/li><li>Working in a high-intensity role where you had to juggle different tasks and responsibilities.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In Summary:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Being\u00a0adaptable and flexible means\u00a0you can quickly and effectively adapt to changing circumstances<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><li>Adaptability depends on your cognitive flexibility, willingness to learn, resourcefulness and versatility<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\"><li>Being adaptable can help you work more effectively and efficiently day-to-day, while also supporting your long-term career development as it pushes you to keep learning<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\"><li>From an employer\u2019s perspective, adaptable employees are more likely to succeed and can help drive innovation<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\"><li>To develop your&nbsp;adaptability&nbsp;you need to reflect on how adaptable you already are, teach yourself to embrace change and keep developing your skillset to become more versatile in your abilities.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Want to find out more about jobs that suit your skills?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Go on to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/our-students\/ug-current\/careers-volunteering-and-opportunities\/careers-and-jobs\/careers-and-enterprise-hub\">&nbsp;Careers &amp; Enterprise Hub,<\/a>&nbsp;and under \u2018Resources\u2019 click on \u2018Labour Market Information\u2019.
