In this blog, we\u2019ll highlight this work and also share interesting projects by staff and students developed through their research and teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The photograph accompanying this post and the one featured on our banner are by current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/study-here\/courses\/photography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/study-here\/courses\/photography\">Photography<\/a> student Jodie Sherrell as part of a series of work taken in the first 2020 lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this first post, we\u2019re sharing a poem by Bethany Climpson  created using lines generated from members of The Writing Circle. The Writing Circle is a student writing group led by Peggy Riley, Lecturer in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/arts-and-humanities\/school-of-humanities\/creative-and-professional-writing\/creative-and-professional-writing.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/arts-and-humanities\/school-of-humanities\/creative-and-professional-writing\/creative-and-professional-writing.aspx\">Creative and Professional Writing<\/a>. They are currently working on an anthology of their work and we&#8217;ll share more details about that as soon as they are confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">a year of this<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">In the last part of the story of my life,\nI met you for Mexican food;\nsipped coffee as I entered the theatre;\nthat last take-away, paneer and heat,\ncumin; all the smells of summer:\nrose, honeysuckle, sweat pea.\nThe taste of my best friend\u2019s Bolognese,\na warm fondu, friends at the table,\na celebration: the cheese board, all laid out,\n1:05AM.\n\nI thought it would be the chillies I miss,\nbut it\u2019s the heat of the bodies,\nthe press of strangers squeezing past.\nIt was my first day of tech,\n(perfect teeny, tiny doughnuts with candyfloss;\na hyper-refined taste of the fair)\nI didn\u2019t realise it would be my last.\n\nSee:\n\nfor a year, I have only seen the four walls of isolation,\nparted from human touch. There is bird song, now,\nold tea stains in old tea cups\nand candy-sweet pink gin.\nI\u2019m trying to keep things growing, ongoing,\nwatering can and basil pot.\nMy grandmother\u2019s famous apple crumble,\nhands sticky with marmalade\n(this is my 54<sup>th<\/sup> loaf of bread)\nand I\u2019ll make a cake from anything I can catch,\nanything that\u2019s standing still.\n\nI trace the shoreline with my viewfinder.\nThe birds don\u2019t know what we\u2019re doing:\nteaching ourselves back-stitch, chain-stitch,\nmaybe make-a-wish stitch,\nwatching rocket launches (west north west\nout my bedroom window), trapped\nin the prison of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century student house;\nfront line work, sitting at my writing desk,\nstacked royal blue reading books with deep navy writing,\nold letters and thoughts untangled, ink flowing\u2014\nthe birds are chirping in my garden,\n\nand then there is snow.\n\nSnow falling heavier than it has for days,\nfrom battleship sky to icy hill.\nKeeping me indoors with steaming hot chocolate,\nstaining the window, tracing ink-washed island chains.\nFresh roses on a chilly spring morning,\nfirst flakes carrying the ozone tang of pine sap and sea\u2014\nI didn\u2019t know that snow had a sound.\nThe little boy squeals in delight\n(my nephew\u2019s photo, smiling at me from a different time),\n\nand the mineral smell of more to come\nhangs in a white sky.\n\nI touch the Valentine\u2019s Day card I made\nwith my own two hands;\nthe skin of my lover the softest it\u2019s ever been.\nIt has been a year\nand the day has already come back around.<\/pre>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Arts and Culture team works across the University to create and support exhibitions, events and performances.
