<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VIEW FROM HER WINDOW<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

AFTER LOUISE BEER\u2019S RESPONSE TO GLACIERS AND WATER:<\/em> <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The North Sea in Margate  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flows in and out of focus, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A composite of time and tide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not images of glaciers crisp and cold <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And high and wide, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stories these ancient glaciers told, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a less- cold Sea from her window <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She sought to show in pixels picturing <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swelling, sifting, shifting <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spring tides and Neaps, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sweeps of waves, both shallow and deep <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With seaweed used as silver gelatine <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No toxic chemicals, poisoning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, here in this swirl of water <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As in the glaciers of old, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With their erratic mica gold, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hails this self – same water, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washing through her blood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Fragile eco-systems fail and erode, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Man, made from water, strode <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through both the warm and cold, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From warming glacial Pole to sun-soaked Pole, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now with its swirling waters, covering the whole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ghaib<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

               I thought -the name of a tribe-<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      Who remain unseen<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                        Into the silence  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                           – the icy silence –<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                     I hear a glacier crack. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drowning in dialect.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                       Ungive iset penitent,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                 rone and aquabob  ungive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            ickle, shockle, shuckle glocken, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            tankle, windle, snipe unheeve…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                        bleb, bleb, bleb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walking, on talking mountain, is never easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You want a cosmic egg, to hatch, and tell you lies?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what, my darling child, would that achieve?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those who run, run, run, away, must have troubles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No guarantee of safe passage, long life, eternal bliss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Havens are temporal things, in the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, perhaps, there is no safe haven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speech so long denied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And will you lie now, and say you are sorry, that you ran?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For you ran to make a track, that speaks of this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glacier<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

in response to Rebecca Huxley’s photograph<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like an osprey in flight,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the Himalayan Passu glacier<\/p>\n\n\n\n

soars silently on the tips of the dark umber mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The osprey surveys the reddish-brown ‘Fairy Meadows’,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and the treacherous, burnt umber, silken slopes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

leading to the broken, zigzag frazil-stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the valley of Ghulkin,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

busy curlews and red-billed choughs<\/p>\n\n\n\n

catch the osprey out of the corner of their eyes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and see their own reflections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Frazil means loose, needle-like ice crystals that form into churning slush in turbulent, super-cooled water.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
