The Arts and Culture team invited staff and students to the Paper Lantern-Making Workshops at the Daphne Oram Gallery to create paper and willow lanterns.
The workshops were free for students and staff and included all materials. This inclusive workshop provides opportunities for international students to practice their language skills while meeting staff and fellow students as everyone created beautiful lanterns together.
All of the workshop attendees were invited to join the Canterbury Christmas Light Parade with their lanterns culminating in the grand Christmas light switch-on, offering a truly festive experience.
The light parade, organised by Canterbury BID, took place on November 15th. It was a warm evening with a full moon and no rain—perfect for paper lanterns! The parade began at Westgate Gardens, winding through the streets, past the cheering crowds, and into the Canterbury Cathedral Precincts, which featured a German-style Christmas market with music and entertainment.
The parade included the Lord Mayor of Canterbury, the Bloco Fogo Drumming Band, illuminated stars, over two hundred glowing lanterns created by local schools, CCCU staff, and international students, as well as the No Limits Street Band, Christmas characters, and Bagpuss!
It was visually exciting and had a great atmosphere. It was also an opportunity for students to experience a unique holiday tradition and the rich culture of Canterbury.
