Three members of the Broadhurst family celebrated graduating together last week, at a unique event at Canterbury Christ Church University’s winter graduation ceremonies.

Dad Samuel, son Kyran and daughter Catherine, all collected their awards on the same day, recognising the achievements of the Kent family.

Samuel said: “Kyran and I graduated together about 18 months ago, when we received our undergraduate degrees, so for Catherine to be joining us this time around is a dream come true and really special.”

Catherine added: “When I saw my dad and brother graduate together, I was impressed; it’s not something you see every day. So, I’m delighted that we could all be here together today as we supported each other when studying.”

Samuel received a Master’s degree in Music, Kyran graduated with a Master’s degree in Sound Design for Film, TV and Interactive Media, and Catherine was awarded a BA (Hons) in English Literature. 

Both Samuel and Kyran studied at Canterbury Christ Church for their undergraduate degrees in Commercial Music, and Creative Music Production and Technology respectively. And both wanted to further their skills with carrying on their studies with a postgraduate degree.

Samuel said: “I started studying for my undergraduate degree when I was 54. I had started music at a very young age but dipped out and gone on to do totally different things in life. A music teacher recommended I should do more with my music and here I am, and now looking at carrying on with my studies with a PhD.”

Kyran too is looking to continue his studies and aims to start studying for his PhD later this year. He said: “The support I received from the Faculty and wellbeing team throughout my Masters has been outstanding. The access to course specific material and equipment was also well managed by the Media Department, ensuring everyone got a fair and equal opportunity to use the required equipment.

“I would recommend anyone who’s serious about doing a postgraduate degree in sound design, or any of the media postgraduate degrees, to seriously consider Canterbury Christ Church University.”
